Lévesque believed Quebec should become its own country. The Liberals disagreed. So he left and eventually founded the Parti Québécois.
He lost his seat at first. But he built the PQ into a major party, became Premier of Quebec in 1976, and held a referendum on Quebec independence in 1980. One of the most important political careers in Canadian history - and it started with crossing the floor.
