Bernard St-Laurent, a Bloc Québécois MP for Manicouagan, broke with the party in March 1997 following internal disputes with the BQ leadership. St-Laurent had been elected in the 1993 BQ sweep of Quebec and had served as a backbencher for three and a half years. His departure reflected ongoing internal tensions within the BQ as the party grappled with its identity between being a protest movement and a professional parliamentary caucus. The BQ under Michel Gauthier (who had succeeded Bouchard as leader in 1996) was experiencing growing pains as some members chafed under caucus discipline.
St-Laurent did not seek re-election in the June 1997 election. His departure was relatively minor in the broader scheme of BQ politics, as the party continued to dominate Quebec's federal seat count through the late 1990s and 2000s. The Manicouagan riding was won by the BQ again in 1997, suggesting St-Laurent's departure was personal rather than reflecting a broader shift in voter sentiment.
