A sitting member leaves a caucus by their own decision and sits without party affiliation.
Inclusion rule
Include whenever the chamber’s own membership record changes to Independent or non-affiliated. A leave of absence, an illness, or a suspension that leaves the recorded affiliation untouched is not this class and is not an event.
Counting rule
One event, counted toward the figure for members who left a caucus and sat as an independent — never toward the floor-crossing figure, and never added to it. No party gained the seat, so there is nothing for a crossings total to record. The two figures are published side by side and answer different questions; the reasoning is at /methodology#project-position and is an opinion, plainly marked as one. If the member later joins another party or returns to the original caucus, that is a further event with its own date under class 4, not a revision of this one.
