Every published correction to this record, what it changed, and when.

A reference work with no corrections page is not a reference work without errors; it is one that has not told you about them. This ledger is the complete public list, newest first, and each entry names the record it applies to, what was wrong, what it says now, and whether the change was material.

Records are corrected or withdrawn, never quietly deleted. A withdrawn record keeps its identifier and its address so that a citation made before the withdrawal still resolves — to a page that says the record was withdrawn and why.

The English biography of Brendan Maguire closed by saying that his crossing "drew comparisons to the Belinda Stronach and David Emerson cases due to the perceived quid pro quo". That sentence implied an improper exchange involving three named living people while attributing the implication to no one: it did not say who drew the comparisons or who perceived the exchange, and it cited no source. Nothing in this record supports it. Where this record does document a cabinet appointment made close to a change of affiliation, it says so precisely and stops there: the claims attached to the Stronach and Carmant appointments each state that the timing is documented and that a quid pro quo or other illegal exchange is not established. A biography cannot assert by implication what those claims are careful to disclaim. The sentence has been removed, and the description of his parliamentary secretary appointment no longer carries the adverb that did the same work. What he gave as his reason is unchanged and remains attributed to him. The participation itself, February 22, 2024, Liberal to Progressive Conservative, is classified as a crossing and is still counted as one.

The English and French biographies said Amanda Simard "crossed the floor to the Ontario Liberal Party in November 2020". The record holds no change in November 2020. It holds two: on November 29, 2018 she left the Progressive Conservative caucus to sit as an independent, classified sat_as_independent, and on January 16, 2020 she joined the Ontario Liberal Party from independent status, classified joined_party_from_independent. Her countable crossing total is zero. The single sentence was therefore wrong three ways: it named the wrong month, the wrong year, and an act, a floor crossing, that this record distinguishes from both of the acts she actually performed. Leaving a caucus to sit as an independent is a legitimate response to disagreeing with a party; carrying a seat from one party to another between elections is the act this record counts. The biographies now state both changes separately at their recorded dates and classifications. A closing sentence of editorial praise was also removed. No date, affiliation, classification or verification level in the underlying participation rows was altered.

How to report an error, how quickly we act, and how every material correction is logged in public, tied to a versioned revision, and never applied silently.

How to report an error

Use the contribution form. It accepts eight kinds of submission — a correction to an existing record, a missing event, a missing participant in a group record, an additional source, a translation problem, a portrait-rights problem, a reconciliation against another dataset, and general feedback — and it routes each to the right queue.

The single most useful thing a report can contain is a locator: a page, a section, a record number or a timestamp inside a source, rather than the address of a source alone. A report that says which line of which record contradicts us can be acted on the same day. A report that says the site is wrong about someone cannot.

A person who is the subject of a record may contest it, and does not have to supply a source in order to be heard. Where a subject contests a record and the evidence is genuinely divided, the record moves to disputed and both accounts are published; it is not resolved by deferring to whichever party wrote first.

What happens to a correction

Every change to a record writes a revision: a row naming the record, the new revision number, what kind of change it was, which fields changed, a summary in both languages, whether the change was material, and who made it. The record’s own revision counter advances with it.

A correction is then a public entry pointing at that revision. The corrections ledger stores the record it concerns, the revision that carried the fix, a title and an explanation in both languages, the date, whether the correction was material, and whether it is published. The link to the revision is mandatory in the schema: a correction cannot be filed without a versioned change behind it, and a change cannot be described as a correction without being written down.

The published corrections read as plainly as they can be made to. They name what the record said, what was wrong with it, and what it says now — for instance that an inherited entry described a federal member as a provincial politician and carried a birth year nobody could support, or that an inherited year-only entry had collapsed two separate affiliation changes into one and has been split so that each keeps its own date.

Withdrawal, not deletion

When a record turns out not to belong in the database at all, it is withdrawn rather than removed. It keeps its identifier, its title is rewritten to say that it has been withdrawn and why, it is linked to whatever replaced it, and it drops out of every count. Nothing that was ever citable becomes a dead link.

The same principle governs claims and sources. A claim that turns out to be unsupported is marked unsupported and kept; a source that turns out not to say what was attributed to it stays attached, with the assessment recorded against it. The record of having been wrong is part of the record.

Versioning and what a citation resolves to

Records carry a permanent identifier and a permanent address, and neither changes when the record does. Data releases carry an immutable version string and fixed counts, so a citation to a release resolves to the data as it stood, not to the data as it stands.

A reader who cited a record before a correction can therefore establish three things without contacting us: that the identifier still resolves, what the record says now, and what changed and when.

The English biography of Brendan Maguire closed by saying that his crossing "drew comparisons to the Belinda Stronach and David Emerson cases due to the perceived quid pro quo". That sentence implied an improper exchange involving three named living people while attributing the implication to no one: it did not say who drew the comparisons or who perceived the exchange, and it cited no source. Nothing in this record supports it. Where this record does document a cabinet appointment made close to a change of affiliation, it says so precisely and stops there: the claims attached to the Stronach and Carmant appointments each state that the timing is documented and that a quid pro quo or other illegal exchange is not established. A biography cannot assert by implication what those claims are careful to disclaim. The sentence has been removed, and the description of his parliamentary secretary appointment no longer carries the adverb that did the same work. What he gave as his reason is unchanged and remains attributed to him. The English and French biographies said Amanda Simard "crossed the floor to the Ontario Liberal Party in November 2020". The record holds no change in November 2020. It holds two: on November 29, 2018 she left the Progressive Conservative caucus to sit as an independent, classified sat_as_independent, and on January 16, 2020 she joined the Ontario Liberal Party from independent status, classified joined_party_from_independent. Her countable crossing total is zero. The single sentence was therefore wrong three ways: it named the wrong month, the wrong year, and an act, a floor crossing, that this record distinguishes from both of the acts she actually performed. Leaving a caucus to sit as an independent is a legitimate response to disagreeing with a party; carrying a seat from one party to another between elections is the act this record counts. The biographies now state both changes separately at their recorded dates and classifications. A closing sentence of editorial praise was also removed. No date, affiliation, classification or verification level in the underlying participation rows was altered.
