Horner was an Alberta Conservative who crossed to join Pierre Trudeau's Liberal cabinet. In Alberta, being a Liberal is almost unthinkable - this was a huge deal.
He was given a cabinet post (Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce) immediately. But Alberta voters were furious. He lost the next election badly. After politics, he was appointed to the Canadian Grain Commission - another government job.
