Lela Evans, the Progressive Conservative MHA for Torngat Mountains — a vast northern Labrador riding representing predominantly Inuit and Innu communities — resigned from the PC Party in March 2022 and joined the NDP. Evans cited frustration with the party's lack of attention to Indigenous issues and northern concerns. As the representative of one of Canada's most remote and marginalized ridings, Evans felt the PC Party was not taking seriously the unique challenges facing her constituents, including inadequate healthcare, housing crises, and food insecurity.
Evans served as the NDP's sole MHA in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. However, in July 2024, she would cross the floor again — back to the Progressive Conservatives — making her one of the few Canadian politicians to cross the floor twice in opposite directions within a single term.
