The affiliation of record changes because the party ceases to exist, merges, or is absorbed — not because a member went looking for a new home.

Inclusion rule

Include, flagged. A member’s label changed on a stated date, in a chamber record, without an election. Omitting these is the single largest cause of silent disagreement with PARLINFO, which records each leg of a merger for each affected member.

Counting rule

One event, with one participant per member whose label changed. When a whole caucus moves in one day, the event total rises by one and the participant total by the size of the caucus. The caucus size must never be added to a crossings total. A party succeeding itself under a new name and a caucus defecting en masse have exactly the same shape — everyone on one event moving from the same party to the same party — and the record currently holds nothing that separates them. Legs of that shape are counted as crossings, because that is what their labels say, and the number of them resting on the unmade ruling is published beside the figure rather than left as a footnote.
